Traprock Continues a 30-year Tradition

Traprock Center for Peace and Justice has been a vibrant organization in Franklin and Hampshire Counties for 30 years since Pauline Bassett, Frances Crowe, Meg Gage and Randy Kehler co-founded Traprock Peace Center at Woolman Hill in Deerfield, Massachusetts. Today, the Board of Directors, chaired by Patricia Hynes, in partnership with Interim Director Sher Sweet, sustains the work of peace and justice in our downtown office on Miles Street near the Energy Park.

In 2010-2011 we are building on the accomplishments and partnerships of the past year.  On July 4th Traprock hosted Interdependence Day in the Greenfield Energy Park and Pastors for Peace caravan on July 5th.  Both of these community events were featured in the Greenfield Recorder.  In August, Traprock, Nuclear Free Future and American Friends Service Committee sponsored memorials, films, vigils, forums, and opinion pieces locally and nationally to commemorate Hiroshima and Nagasaki and to call for an end to nuclear weapons and nuclear power.    Following the success of our recent “Roots of War” speaker series and Community Voices blog, we are planning a “Roots of Peace” speakers’ series and Community Voices blog, peace-building workshop, and children’s art event.  Long-time educator, consultant and facilitator of peacebuilding and conflict transformation around the world, Paula Green will start off the series on September 24, 2010. The Traprock-Greenfield Community College collaboration continues to grow with the year-long participation of GCC students in the speaker series, Community Voices blog and peace-building workshop.  This innovative partnership poises Traprock to help build new generations of peace and justice activists.

Thanks to the hard work of board members and volunteers, Traprock’s website has become a rich educational extension of the hard work that is done on Miles Street, featuring regularly updated focus areas on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, Health Effects of War, Weapons of War, and Cuba.  We encourage you to visit our website for a list of films we lend and other Traprock resources.

Keep Traprock Vibrant in 2010 – 2011

We need a Circle of Donors
In order to have the resources to continue our outreach to individuals and organizations, to offer excellent and provocative programming and to stay engaged with the far-ranging issues of militarism, peace and justice, we need to ask our supporters to help us financially.  Given the difficult economic times, we have cut our budget as much as we can; and it is still difficult to meet expenses. In addition to the many supporters who send in contributions of $25—and we need every one of those-- we also need sustaining donors ($500 or more a year) as well.  Will you become part of this circle?  By having a number of such donors, we can meet our budget and sustain the critical work of Traprock. We don’t want the lack of money to limit our vision. Both small and large donors who make a pledge to Traprock will be making it possible for Traprock to thrive.

Dollar a Week for Peace
If you cannot be a sustaining donor, would you be willing to give a dollar a week for peace, $52? You may send us a contribution through the mail, drop it by our office at 24 Miles Street in Greenfield or click on the PayPal button below.  PayPal is a reputable and secure organization through which you can make a contribution to Traprock Center for Peace and Justice.

 $52 will buy:

  • Use of the Energy Park for a program like July 4th
  • Electricity for two weeks in the Traprock Office
  • Postcard campaign to ask Senator Brown to support the START Treaty
  • Flyers for a major event

$100 will pay for:

  • Honorarium for a Roots of Peace speaker
  • T-shirts and art supplies for making peace shirts
  • Ink cartridges and paper
  • Phone bill for a month

$500 will pay for:

  • Traprock office rent for three weeks
  • Travel expenses and honorarium of a nationally- known speaker
  • A half-time director’s salary for almost two weeks
  • A day-long workshop on non-violence training

Your support helps us to achieve our mission:   To promote peace and justice at the individual, social and institutional levels through education, community engagement, political action, and strategic partnerships.

On behalf of the Board of Directors of Traprock Center for Peace and Justice, I bid you peace,

Sher Sweet,

interim director
