June 11 Fundraiser for Traprock and the Wally and Juanita Nelson Scholarship Fund

Pat Hynes, chair of the Trarockk board was emcee for the fundraiser event.  In addition to thanking cellist Mark Fraser and venerable community singer Annie Hassett as well as introducing board members and Traprock program partners, she discussed briefly Traprock’s current and future work with Greenfield Community College Peace Studies.  Working in partnership, using media to reach wider audiences, and peace education leadership were key themes.
Abbie Jenks, Traprock board member and founding director of the Peace, Justice and Environmental Studies Program at GCC, traced the origins of the Peace Studies Program at GCC and its accomplishments.  She underscored the on-going partnership with Traprock in promoting peace education leadership through speakers programs and skill-based workshops.

Keynote speaker Randy Kehler, a co-founder of Traprock and Massachusetts director for Safe and Green campaign to close the Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant, spoke movingly on the theme of “More Than One Road to Peace and Justice.”

Mary McCarthy, the 2010-2011 recipient of the Wally and Juanita Scholarship in Peace Studies at GCC described the meaning and value of the scholarship to herself and other GCC scholarship recipients. 

"The financial value of the scholarship is vital for students today," she said, "but even more valuable, is the dignity and esteem that it gives to Peace Studies."
